The Devil and the Mayor
Get to know your neighbor: a hike full of legends, views, and history right on the Müllnerberg.
Just behind your vacation apartment begins our tour “The Devil and the Mayor” – there’s no better way to get to know your neighbor, the Müllnerberg. The path leads through the stone archway to the Schroffen, where a once-famous mountain inn with its own gentian distillery hosted Reichenhall’s society gatherings.
You then continue upward into the narrow, legendary Devil’s Gorge, a place whose mysterious atmosphere has long captivated hikers. A little higher up you reach the Bürgermeisterhöhe, where Mayor Mathias Mack built paths and benches for spa guests back in the 19th century. From here, a sweeping view opens over the Thumsee, Karlstein, and the striking Hochstaufen ridge.
The descent finally leads you to the Saalach Lake – where, in a seemingly mystical way, the water vanishes into the mountain and leaves nature’s mystery to the imagination. A two-hour circular hike that unites nature, legend, and history – and shows you just how fascinating your neighboring mountain truly is.
